Chayn Launch

Ladies and Gentlemen, We are Live!

You may have seen us on your facebook or twitter feed, our thunderclap campaign or heard a friend mention us in a conversation. After 3 months of intensive hard work, Google hangouts, coffee meetings, weekend hack days and facebook collaboration – Chayn website has been launched.

Chayn, Pakistan’s first global volunteer-led crowd-sourced website, made to aid women facing domestic violence, is launching on 14th August!

80% women in Pakistan face domestic violence in their lives (We Can Report, 2011) but cultural attitudes, social norms, legislative structures and economic status of women prevent them from taking action to protect themselves or/and even mislead them to believe that DV is acceptable or even their own fault!

We, therefore, decided to help these women! Chayn is the beginning of a one-step digital network to combat domestic violence in Pakistan- one informed woman at a time.Within three months of its inception, the project has grown into a global movement; presently there are more than 30 volunteers contributing to the online and offline.

Online initiatives primarily entail information sharing – the website contains information from divorce laws and self-help guides to organizations helping women across Pakistan, support sources aiming to provide women the support that they may not find so easily elsewhere, campaigning, and gathering relevant data to get a clearer picture of how to help more effectively. Chayn will continue to work offline too, by campaigning through a sticker campaign to raise public awareness and organizing a series of events and meet-ups in Pakistan to stir conversation around combating domestic violence.
Preparations for the launch have been in full swing for the past week. Volunteers are constantly working really hard to put up a fantastic and user-friendly website, and also spreading the word about Chayn, many of them taking out time from their busy lives to do so. We collaborate and communicate on Facebook all the time and share ideas, documents and suggestions give constructive feedback to each other- so we are doing immense elbow grease, both individually and collectively, so as to seek excellence for this worthy cause. We are so proud to announce we smashed our 100 supporters in 5 day target on Thunderclap! You can read more about our volunteers and vision by click here.

Most of us have never met the rest physically but we are united in our idealism and commitment to our cause. Apart from virtual communication and cooperation, though, there have also been some full-fledged local meet-ups in some places including London and Lahore, where the official launch is to take place.

The launch event will take place on 14th August, which is also Pakistan’s Independence Day. Everyone is welcome to attend. You can help us in this initiative by supporting us financially, morally, practically or even simply spreading the word about Chayn. Come forward and join us. Support Chayn so that somewhere, some woman, some child may breathe easier, live better and feel safer.

We would like to take this time to thank Oxford Jam for funding this website and MakeSense for helping us bring the website to life.
