This morning, I read one something that shocked me to my core and I just had to say something about it. Prosecutors in South Carolina believe that Stand Your Ground doesn’t apply to victims of domestic violence but the law was meant for intruders and stranger, not for domestic affairs. Funny they should say that…
“From 2001 through 2012, 6,410 women were murdered in the United States by an intimate partner using a gun—more than the total number of U.S. troops killed in action during the entirety of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined. Guns are used in fatal intimate partner violence more than any other weapon: Of all the women killed by intimate partners during this period, 55 percent were killed with guns. Women in the United States are 11 times more likely to be murdered with a gun than are women in other high income countries.” Source:http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/guns-crime/report/2014/06/18/91998/women-under-the-gun/
Oh, but why oh why would we have the same rules for women as we would have for the men wielding them. Because guns aren’t for protection, are they? They are for shooting black kids with sandwiches and skittles and women who you are supposed to love.
South Carolina: This is beyond disgraceful.
Let me quote the last paragraph from the story covered by Think Progress which shows us the alarming discrepancy between judicial rulings on stand your ground:
“But one of the demonstrated flaws of Stand Your Ground laws is that their imposition has been arbitrary, and allowed immunity in many more cases involving white shooters and black victims. In cases in which women have invoked Stand Your Ground laws, an MSNBC analysis found that women invoking the Stand Your Ground defense against white men succeeded in only about 2.6 percent of cases (2.9 percent of the woman was also white). The disparity of Stand Your Ground cases came to national attention with the case of Marissa Alexander, who was sentenced to 20 years in jail for firing a warning shot against her alleged abuser. She was denied Stand Your Ground immunity.”
As a pro-gun control feminist, I don’t want anyone to have guns but that’s not the debate here. The point here is about equal access. If men are allowed to stand your ground when in fear of their life from strangers, then why are not women allowed to use it when in fear of life from their loved ones specially considering majority of fatal crimes against women are perpetrated by people known to them? How is the fear of life any different in this case? If anything, it should be more. One cannot be certain of the intention of strangers but a woman who has experienced the wrath of an abuser knows very well what is it stake if she doesn’t protect herself. Every month, an average of 48 American women are shot to death by a current or former intimate partner. [Source: Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense, 2014]
